This article ran last year. However, its important to remember the actions taken by then candidate Trump on his road to the White House.
Update 1: Here is proof that Matt Drudge ran the story on his Facebook page.
Update 2: Radio host and author Michael Savage states that the story is false and he has good sources to back it up. It is of note that Savage was a Donald Trump supporter:
Michael Savage said today on his radio show that the National Enquirer story smearing Ted Cruz is completely false, and he knows this based on a source he says he would trust with his life. Savage points out that Cruz is rightly offended over this utter garbage.
But even more so, Savage says that he abhors these attempts of assassination by innuendo, as it has been done to him, and while he doesn’t blame Trump for the story, he threatens to withdraw his support of Trump if he doesn’t completely disavow the story and the man who owns the National Enquirer, David Pecker.
I’m absolutely disgusted with Matt Drudge and desperately want to know what happened to him. I used to spend so much time looking through the headlines on the Drudge Report before going off to other sites. It was a great starting point from which to grab a lot of information. However, for the past few months Matt Drudge h as thrown himself completely behind Donald Trump and destroyed his credibility. The last straw was a shameless act today where he shared a National Enquirer story smearing Ted Cruz on his Facebook page, but did not put it on his website. Considering Drudge puts hundreds of links on his page in the average week, I doubt it was a space issue. All I can think of is that he knows it’s a fake story and he doesn’t want the credibility hit on his website. However, by putting it up on Facebook he throws his name behind it and it gets spread al over the place.
In case you were wondering, the National Enquirer Story is a complete hoax. The Gateway Pundit reached out to one of the women who was suspected to be in the article and this was her response:
Its ridiculous. Anyone with half a brain knows its false… I don’t think the article is true. I can’t see Cruz being like that… All I know is its not me. There’s a reason they don’t use my name. They know its BS.
After the firestorm, which was why Donald Trump sent this story out through the National Enquirer, Ted Cruz responded on his Facebook account with the following statement:
I want to be crystal clear: these attacks are garbage. For Donald J. Trumpto enlist his friends at the National Enquirer and his political henchmen to do his bidding shows you that there is no low Donald won’t go.
These smears are completely false, they’re offensive to Heidi and me, they’re offensive to our daughters, and they’re offensive to everyone Donald continues to personally attack.
Donald Trump’s consistently disgraceful behavior is beneath the office we are seeking and we are not going to follow.
This isn’t even a new tactic for Donald Trump. He did the same thing earlier trying to discredit Ben Carson when Carson was his primary opponent. In that case the National Enquirer accused Ben Carson of leaving sponges in a patient’s brain. A New York Magazine article investigating the allegations stated the following:
Trump and Enquirer CEO David Pecker have been friends for years. “They’re very close,” said a source close to the Enquirer. In July 2013, Trump even tweeted that Pecker should become CEO of Time magazine, which at the time was being spun off from its corporate parent, Time Warner. “He’d make it exciting and win awards!”
This person also said that Trump’s campaign was a source for the article: “His campaign provided information that was used,” he explained. A Trump friend said that in the days leading up to the article’s publication Trump was telling people that Carson “had a lot of medical malpractice suits” and “almost killed a guy.”
Besides being friends with Donald Trump, the National Enquirer has even gone as far as endorsing Trump in early March. Its very telling that their new story trying to defame Ted Cruz is spreading through the Trump ranks like wildfire.
